The problem
Renting someone else's platform for every client site means paying per site, per month, forever, and inheriting their limits. Running it yourself means owning the failure modes instead.
The approach
One storage-first server carrying the data, containers carrying the services, and a CDN in front terminating TLS strictly. Client sites are separate virtual hosts on the same host rather than separate bills.
The architecture
- TrueNAS storage server as the base — pools, datasets and share layout
- Docker containers for web, database, mail capture and support tooling
- Apache with per-site virtual hosts, one per client project
- MySQL / MariaDB and PostgreSQL instances per application
- Cloudflare in front with SSL set to Full (Strict) — the origin certificate is validated, not just the edge
- osTicket and Chatwoot for support intake
Result
Designed so adding a client site is a virtual host and a database, not a new hosting subscription — and so TLS is validated end to end rather than terminated at the edge.
